This is the first official blog for Payton's Race for a Cure! You'll have to be patient with me since I'm not real good at these things!! The purpose behind the blog is to keep everyone up to date on the progress of our UMDF charity event taking place in September. First, let me start by saying we named the event after our daughter, Payton. NONE of the proceeds will be going towards my family or anyone beyond the United Mitochondrial Disease Foundation. The name was given in honor of our daughter and our strong desire to do whatever we can to fight this horrendous disease.
So, with all of that being said let me get everyone up to speed on where we stand with the event. We originally played around with several different concepts, a walk, a concert, a dirt bike race (my husband, sons and friends influence!!) and several other things. At this point in time we have yet to lock down a definite location, but we have a meeting this Sunday in hopes to check that off our list. The location is a dirt bike track located near Cedar Springs. What we would like to do is have a charity dirt bike race/practice on the morning of September 12th followed by a walk in the afternoon. Once the walk is completed we are hoping for games, events, food and possibly a concert and/or DJ. Now, please keep in mind none of this is a definite goal yet, but we are working darn hard to obtain it! One of the other UMDF Western Michigan Mito Group members will be attending the UMDF Annual Symposium in D.C. this year. Once she comes back from that I would like to set up a meeting with anyone who can make it to brainstorm, designate responsibilities and just work as a group to get this event accomplished. This is not a small task, but I really believe that we are capable of completing it. My main mission in all of this is to promote more awareness to the disease, which in return will hopefully produce more funding for research and get us closer to a cure. So, who's with me?!?!

I think this is a great cause and can't wait to participate.
